Introduction to Sustainable Development
Bismillah,
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most
Merciful.
Today I will share with all of you what i have learnt in my first UNGS
1201 lesson. Actually, at first, I have no idea of what is this subject's
about, what I will learn in this subject, why we need to take this subject and
so on. So during the pre-reg, I just randomly choose the section that my friend
suggest to me or what my hand choose. Of course because I don't know how to
used it. But, suddenly my another friend said that her senior suggest if you
are an engineering student, it is better to choose the lecturer from Kuliyyah
of Engineering (KOE). Since Dr 'Atiah is my mahallah's fellow, I choose to join
her class.
Amazing.
This is one word from me to describe her class. I admire how she make
our class livelier and more interesting. For me, the way she teach, make me
understand more about what we learnt.
From our first lesson, I learnt about three concept in sustainability
measurement. The first is living with certain limits of earth capacity to
maintain life. Second, understanding the interconnections among economy,
society and environment. Third, maintaining a fair distribution of resources
and opportunity for this generation and the next.
I also learnt the triple bottom line that consists of three element
which is people, profit and planet. This three element is related to each
other. If one of these is having a problem, it will affected another two. The
triple bottom line aims to measure the social equity (people), economic
prosperity (profit) and environmental (planet).
In 2015, United Nation (UN) made a program with collection of 17
interlinked goals which is known as Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Their
mission is to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all and intended
to be achieve by 2030. Dr 'Atiah had assigned our class to make a research
about one of this goals by group. My group choose the first goal in SDG which
is no poverty. There are still many people who struggling for their daily
necessities in order to survive in this world. We related this goal to the
current issue in our world right now which is Pandemic Covid-19. In Malaysia,
due to this pandemic, population of B40 is increased. Many people lost their job
during this pandemic. For sure, they are struggling to afford their basic
needs. For this goal, we can conclude that poverty is the main problem that can
stop the development of a country. That is why no poverty is one of goal that
included in SDG.
